ALERT - SCAM WARNING FROM SARS

Don’t respond to fake fax! Taxpayers should be on the alert for a fake fax which purportedly aims to inform them of changes in SARS’s banking details for electronic transfers. A “new” account number is then given and taxpayers are asked to deposit their money for SARS in to this account. Note that all SARS accounts that taxpayers have to pay into are not denoted by an account number but by a beneficiary ID. They are distinguished by the type of tax being paid – for example, income tax is SARS-ITA.

Taxpayers should report all suspicious incidents to the SARS anti-corruption hotline on 0800 00 2870.
