FAQ: What is the purpose of provisional tax?

The purpose of provisional tax is to allow a taxpayer to pay income tax during the tax year in which the income is earned. It is an advance payment of a taxpayer’s income tax liability.

By paying the provisional tax amounts due, the taxpayer will avoid large amounts of tax due on assessment, as the tax burden is spread over a few payments for the relevant year of assessment.
