15 October 2014 – 200kg Crystal Meth seized at OR Tambo International

Pretoria 14 October 2014 – The SARS Customs Team at the OR Tambo International cargo section identified two separate consignments that had arrived in Johannesburg from Benin for further checks.
This was as a result of an increase in attempted drugs shipments from Benin. The shipments had been declared as containing prop shafts.
As the team began the examinations, their narcotics detector dogs “Angel” and “Bastian” reacted positively. On further investigation (and the use of an angle grinder), a sugar-like substance was found concealed inside the prop shafts.
The substance has been confirmed as Crystal Meth (“Tik”) weighing a total of 200kg (116kg and 84kg), with a value of over R59 million.
This is the biggest ever seizure of Crystal Meth by SARS at OR Tambo. The drugs have been handed over to the SAPS for further investigation.
