3 February 2016 – SARS busts abalone and ephedrine worth over R10-million

Pretoria, 2 February 2016 – SARS Customs Control officials busted ephedrine and abalone valued at more than R10-million in two separate incidents.
In the first a routine inspection led to the arrest of a Tanzanian male passenger from Dar Es Salam who was carrying two pieces of luggage.
Inspection of the bags unveiled seven transparent bags containing a crystal substance that turned out to be Ephedrine, weighing 26kg with a street value of R8 100 000
The passenger and contents were handed over to SAPS for further investigation.
In the second incident, a detector dog, again, identified a consignment of abalone worth R2-million at the OR Tambo International Airport.
Investigations revealed dry abalone hidden in Sheen wrap weighing 577kg valued at R2 019 500. This was handed over to SAPS for further investigations.
