FAQ: I have received a WhatsApp from SARS regarding debt owed, how do I know it’s a legitimate WhatsApp and not a scam?

To verify whether correspondence from SARS is legitimate and not a scam:

  • Verify the debt directly on SARS eFiling or the SARS MobiApp before taking any action. Any legitimate debt should reflect on your SARS profile.
  • Check SARS Current Surveys, SMSs and Emails  to confirm whether the message forms part of an official SARS communication campaign.
  • Check Scams and Phishing | South African Revenue Service for examples of known scam messages currently in circulation. Scam alerts are regularly.
  • If you suspect a scam, do not respond. Report it to [email protected] and always verify the communication through official SARS channels: Contact Us before making any payment or sharing personal information.

Remember: SARS will never request your password, OTP, banking PIN, or eFiling login details via SMS, email, WhatsApp, social media, or telephone. SARS will also not provide a SARS bank account number for payments on a WhatsApp message or letter and no links should be opened.
