Pretoria, 31 October 2013 – The South African Revenue Service (SARS) today releases trade statistics for September 2013 that record a trade deficit of R18.94 billion.

Summary 

The R18.94 billion deficit for September 2013 can be attributed to exports of R66.53 billion and imports of R85.47 billion.

Exports decreased from August to September by R4.23 billion (6.0%) and imports decreased from August to September by R4.39 billion (4.9%).
The cumulative deficit for 2013 is R126.37 billion compared to R83.60 billion in 2012.
Trade Highlights by Category 
  • The August to September change (down by 6.0%) in exports of goods reflected decreases and increases in:
    • Vehicles, aircraft and vessels decreased by R4 377 million (-58%);
    • Precious and semi-precious stones and metals decreased by R2 024 million (-12%);
    • Vegetable products decreased by R 880 million (-21%);
    • Pulp of wood, waste and scrap of paper decreased by R 503 million (-34%);
    • Machinery and electrical appliances decreased by R 491 million (-8%);
    • Mineral products increased by R3 376 million (23%);
    • Base metals and articles thereof increased by R 843 million (10%);
  • The August to September change (down by 4.9%) in imports of goods reflected decreases and an increases in:
    • Vehicles, aircraft and vessels decreased by R2 531 million (-27%);
    • Base metals and articles thereof decreased by R1 161 million (-23%);
    • Original equipment components decreased by R 976 million (-16%);
    • Products of the chemicals or allied industries decreased by R 952 million (-12%);
    • Machinery and electrical appliances decreased by R 753 million (-3%);
    • Mineral products increased by R2 622 million (14%);

Trade Highlights by World Zone  

 

The world zone results for August to September 2013 as given below are unaudited.

  • Asia:  The deficit decreased from R17 392 million in August 2013 to R17 168 million in September 2013. Exports increased by R 708 million to R26 176 million and imports increased by R 485 million to R43 344 million.
  • Europe:   The deficit decreased from R10 917 million in August 2013 to R7 630 million in September 2013. Exports decreased by R 283 million to R16 840 million and imports decreased by R3 570 million to R24 471 million.
  • America:  The deficit increased from R1 240 million in August 2013 to R3 154 million in September 2013. Exports decreased by R2 727 million to R5 680 million and imports decreased by R 813 million to R8 834 million.
  • Africa:  The surplus decreased from R5 240 million in August 2013 to R5 238 million in September 2013. Exports decreased by R 388 million to R12 814 million and imports decreased by R 386 million to R7 576 million.
  • Oceania:  The deficit increased from R 493 million in August 2013 to R 676 million in September 2013. Exports decreased by R 285 million to R 502 million and imports decreased by R 102 million to R1 178 million.
