9 November 2020 – Update on the discontinuation of cheques
Banks are discontinuing cheques as a payment method. The last date for SARS Customs payments made at a SARS port of entry per cheque will be on or before Sunday 13 December 2020 and for all other SARS payments, it will be on or before Thursday, 31 December 2020.
How to make payments for Customs and Excise Payments?
Payments for customs and excise can be done through eFiling, Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) and cash payment. Credit and/or debit cards can only be used for payment of duties and/or VAT for travellers.
When should payments be made at Branch Offices?
Payments may be made during office hours between 8:00 – 15:00 at any Customs and/or Excise Office. The client should ensure that a payment is received by SARS on time in order to avoid any penalties and/or interest being charged. If a payment date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, the payment must be made on the last business day prior to the days mentioned above.
Top tip: All specified payment dates must strictly be adhered to.
What are Payment rules?
The Account Management System was implemented in all the Customs and/or Excise Branch Offices and the Payment Reference Number (PRN) usage is important in order to allow automated allocation of payments. You can refer to the GEN-PAYM-01-G01 – SARS Payment Rules – External Guide
for detailed information on the payment rules and acceptable payment methods.
Are there penalties for late payments?
Interest and penalties will be charged on any late payments, according to the applicable interest. If clients fail to adhere to the provisions of the Act, then SARS considers it to be an offence.
