SARS Tax Practitioner Readiness Programme

What is the programme?

The SARS Tax Practitioner Readiness Programme educates prospective tax practitioners about their obligations and responsibilities. This programme is an entry requirement for any individual intending to register as a tax practitioner. It provides information on the SARS processes that tax practitioners must follow to provide a high-quality, professional, and ethical service to clients.

Per the amended recognition criteria for Recognised Controlling Bodies (RCBs) and the registration criteria for tax practitioners, this training has been compulsory since 2022 for individuals who want to register as tax practitioners.

Based on feedback received from those who have attended the programme, queries from prospective and registered tax practitioners, and changes to the legislation, processes, rules and systems, SARS has amended the programme to keep it relevant to the needs of tax practitioners.

The existing material and the updated material are available. SARS and the RCBs must still agree on the effective date for the use of the updated material on which prospective tax practitioners will be assessed. SARS will communicate this date once it is finalised.

Although the programme is for individuals who want to register as tax practitioners, the modules are useful also to registered tax practitioners to refresh their knowledge of the tax environment and for staff who work with tax practitioners.

How has SARS been implementing the programme?

SARS has been implementing this programme in partnership with the RCBs :

  • All learning materials are provided to RCBs and members intending to register as tax practitioners can work through their RCBs to register for the programme.
  • In addition, SARS places the material on the SARS YouTube TV Channel once all internal governance processes have been completed.
