Non-provisional taxpayers can file from 13 July to 23 October 2026, provisional taxpayers from 13 July 2026 to 22 January 2027, and Trusts from 19 September 2026 to 22 January 2027.

Auto Assessments (1–12 July 2026)

SARS has selected taxpayers with simple tax affairs for Auto Assessment.

  • Auto-assessment notifications will be sent by SMS or email only to selected taxpayers from 1 to 12 July 2026.
  • View your Auto Assessment notification on the SARS MobiApp or eFiling.
  • No notification received? Check your Auto Assessment status using SARS Online Query System (SOQS).
  • Taxpayers who are not auto assessed or do not agree with the Auto Assessment must submit their annual Income Tax Returns (ITR12) on SARS eFiling or Mobi App. These channels are convenient, allowing you to file from anywhere 24/7.

Non-Provisional and Provisional Taxpayers (13 July–23 October 2026)

Non-provisional and provisional taxpayers can start submitting their returns on 13 July 2026.

Before submitting, gather any 2026 supporting documents, such as:

  • IRP5/IT3(a) certificate from your employer/s
  • Medical aid certificate
  • Retirement annuity fund certificate/s
  • Investment income statements (IT3b)
  • Travel logbook, if you received a travel allowance
  • Records of rental, freelance, or other income
  • Capital gains or loss information
  • ITR-DD disability confirmation form
  • Section 18A donation certificates
  • Purchase or lease agreements
  • Any other records of income or deductions you want to claim

Phishing and Scams

Beware of tax fraud. Be alert to email and SMS scams during Tax Season. Fraudsters may impersonate SARS to illegally obtain your personal information or money.

Protect yourself

  • Never share your username, password, or OTP.
  • Avoid opening suspicious links in emails or attachments (e.g. .htm/.html).
  • Do not share personal or banking details.
Update Your Personal Details

Update your contact and banking details on the SARS MobiApp or eFiling. This helps you get SARS messages on time and ensures any refund is paid quickly.

On SARS eFiling:

  • Log in to eFiling.
  • Go to My Profile.
  • Open Profile and Preference Setup.
  • Update and confirm your details.

If you see a red prompt:

  • Click the Update Contact Details dropdown.
  • Confirm or change your details.

If you can’t receive your OTP or log in:

  • Go to the eFiling login page.
  • Click Update Contact Details and follow the prompts.

Tip: Have your username and password ready. If you forgot them, use “Forgot Username” or “Forgot Password”.

Keeping your details up to date lets you avoid delays — take a minute now to check and update if needed.

Step 1: Registration

If you do not yet have a tax number, start by registering for SARS eFiling (www.sarsefiling.co.za). Select Register and follow the prompts. Once you are registered, SARS will issue your tax reference number using your preferred contact method. You need a valid South African ID to complete the registration.

Step 2: Complete and Submit Your Return

Open your ITR12 for the correct tax year. Review the pre-filled information carefully, add any missing details, and submit your return only once everything is correct. After submission, you can view your assessment on eFiling or the SARS MobiApp.
