The South African Revenue Service (SARS) today releases trade statistics for November 2014 that recorded a trade deficit of R5.70 billion. This figure includes trade data with Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland (BLNS).

There have been media allegations against some of the Senior Officials within South African Revenue Service (SARS). The allegations were initially levelled against Mr. Johan Van Loggerenberg. After these allegations surfaced, Mr. Ivan Pillay, who was the Acting Commissioner, appointed a panel to investigate the existence and truthfulness of the allegations, and Advocate Muzi Sikhakhane SC, together with his panel of senior advocates were accordingly tasked to investigate the allegations.

Exports decreased from September to October by R1.63 billion (-1.8%) and imports increased from September to October by R16.65 billion (17.8%). The cumulative deficit for 2014 is R95.11 billion compared to R73.08 billion in 2013.

Exports increased from August to September 2014 by R14.00 billion (18.2%) and imports increased from August to September 2014 by R0.17 billion (0.2%). The cumulative deficit for 2014 is R73.74 billion compared to R63.07 billion in 2013.

The SARS Customs Team at the OR Tambo International cargo section identified two separate consignments that had arrived in Johannesburg from Benin for further checks.

Exports decreased from July to August by R8.19 billion (9.6%) and imports increased from July to August by R1.28 billion (1.4%). The cumulative deficit for 2014 is R70.74 billion compared to R51.88 billion in 2013.

The cumulative deficit for 2014 is R55.49 billion compared to R41.11 billion in 2013.

The cumulative deficit for 2014 is R48.27 billion compared to R35.57 billion in 2013.

The R11.39 billion deficit for March 2014 [trade deficit R21.16 billion] can be attributed to exports of R80.26 billion [R68.39 billion] and imports of R91.65 billion [R89.55 billion]. Exports decreased from February to March by R2.51 billion (3.0%) [R3.93 billion (5.4%)] and imports increased from February to March by R9.52 billion (11.6%) [R9.65 billion (12.1%)]. The cumulative deficit for 2014 is R27.69 billion [R53.04 billion] compared to R21.61 billion [R40.28 billion] in 2013.

The Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan today (7 April 2014) officially launched the SA Tax Ombud whose objective is to review and address complaints by taxpayers regarding service, procedural or administrative issues relating to their dealings with the SA Revenue of Service (SARS). As announced in October 2013, retired Judge Bernard Ngoepe is the Tax Ombud.


3 April 2014 – Specifications for the reporting of information under FATCA, AEOI and domestic law

On 8 February 2013, the National Treasury and the South African Revenue Service (SARS) announced the start of negotiations with the US Department of the Treasury to enter into an inter-governmental agreement (IGA) with respect to the USA’s Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA). The wording of a draft IGA has now been agreed upon and will be signed at Governmental level as soon as possible.

Exports increased [decreased] from December to January by R0.10 billion (0.1%) [R0.54 billion (0.8%)] and imports increased from December to January by R19.75 billion (26.3%) [R19.61 billion (26.8%)]. The cumulative deficit for 2014 is R17.06 billion [R24.58 billion] compared to R17.64 billion [R23.55 billion] in 2013.
