South African Trade Statistics for December 2011
Pretoria, 31 January 2012 –
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) today releases trade statistics for December 2011 that record a trade surplus of R4.7 billion.

Tax returns exceed 4 million milestone
Pretoria, Sunday 29 January 2012 – South African taxpayers haveraised the tax compliance bar yet again.For the first time in this country’s history the number of individual tax returns received for any specific tax year has exceeded the 4 million mark.

  • Feedback on the Bulk Income Tax Registration (ITREG) is now available
    Feedback on the Bulk Income Tax Registration (ITREG) is now available for employers, who will be able to obtain Income Tax reference numbers for those employees that the South African Revenue Service (SARS) could successfully register using the recent Employer Reconciliation Declaration (EMP501) submitted for 2011 interim Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) reconciliation.     SARS is offering taxpayers who submit bulk 3rd party data submissions an opportunity to contribute towards the effective implementation of this new channel by participating in a testing initiative that precedes full implementation.  See the letter to stakeholders, click here.

    Please note that the following email doing the rounds, is a scam:
    Tax Refund Notification - After the calculations of your fiscal activity for last year, we have determined that you are eligible to receive a tax refund of R 13,182.52 ZAR. Please download and submit the tax refund request and allow 2-3 days in order to process it.DOWNLOAD to submit your tax refund request Note : A refund can be delayed a variety of reasons, for example submitting invalid records or applying after deadline.

  • Current medical scheme contribution deduction replaced by a medical scheme contribution for tax credit, for taxpayers aged below 65
    Effective 1 March 2012 the medical scheme contribution deduction will, for taxpayers aged below 65, be replaced by a medical scheme contribution tax credit, in an effort to achieve greater equality in the treatment of medical expenses across income groups. Read more here...
